On Tuesday, April 2nd, 2019 around 8:00 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the 1200 block of Douglas Ave for a report of an apartment fire. When officers arrived on scene they found heavy smoke conditions coming from an apartment on the second floor inside a multi-level apartment building. It was unknown to officers if there were residents still inside the apartment and search/rescue efforts were immediately started. No one was located inside.
Fire suppression efforts were started and the fire was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes. Officers were on scene for just over an hour conducting firefighter operations. The fire was contained to one apartment, however there was minor water damage sustained to surrounding apartments. The building had an operational sprinkler system which was critical in this incident in containing the fire and preventing fire spread throughout the building.
No civilians or firefighters were injured in this incident. Two residents were temporarily displaced due to the fire, but are receiving services through the Red Cross. The fire cause is under investigation by the Fire Marshal.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 488-8911, Silent Observer at 343-2100 or report online at www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
