Kalamazoo, MI:

On March 10, 2019, at approximately 1:36 pm, officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) were dispatched to the area just east of the Kalamazoo Transportation Center, 459 N Burdick St, regarding a report that a male was struck by a train.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the incident and located the individual who had sustained apparent injuries. This individual was awake, communicating with officers and agreed to be evaluated by LIFE EMS.  The 58 year old Kalamazoo resident was transported to Bronson Hospital to be further evaluated and is in stable condition.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers made contact with surrounding businesses in the area as well as Amtrak personnel to gather information.  Sources indicated, which was confirmed by surveillance video, that the individual was walking too close to the train tracks and trespassing on Amtrak property.  The individual disregarded Amtrak’s flashing lights, sounding air horn as well as the gates that were descending at the upcoming intersection. The train was traveling at low speeds, in preparation to stop, and activated their emergency braking system once the individual failed to obey the various signals by the train.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation. Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8994 or Silent Observer at 343-2100.
