Driver arrested after fleeing, stolen gun recovered

Kalamazoo, MI: On March 9th, 2019 at about 1:00AM an officer from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that was driving recklessly near W North St and Simpson St. The vehicle had also been reported as driving through yards in the area of N Princeton Ave and Drexel Pl just prior to the traffic stop. The vehicle fled from officers who chose not to pursue the vehicle. Soon after the vehicle ran a red light at W North and Douglas Ave and struck another vehicle causing minor injuries. The suspect vehicle continued west for about two blocks before the driver fled on foot, leaving behind a stolen handgun that was recovered by officers.

A perimeter was established and police K9 Bach was deployed to conduct a track. The suspect was soon located hiding near some garbage cans in the 1400 block of Forbes Ave and taken into custody without incident. The suspect was identified as a 26 year old Kalamazoo resident who had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest. He was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on multiple felony charges related to the incident as well as his outstanding warrants.

Anyone who has information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8120 or Silent Observer at 343-2100.
