SHOPLIFTING LEADS TO RECOVERY OF STOLEN FIREARM AND MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES

February 2, 2019 by Michael Skurski

Kalamazoo, MI:  On February 2, 2019, at approximately 2:09 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to a store in the 2100-block of Parkview Ave. for the report of a shoplifting in progress.  While officers were attempting to detain the suspect, he discarded a firearm, pulled away from them and fled on foot out of the store.  Officers chased the suspect to Logan Ave. where they lost sight of him.  During a search of the area, they were able to determine he was inside a residence in the 2200-block of Logan Ave.  They were also able to identify the suspect.  They secured the residence from the exterior and requested the Kalamazoo Metropolitan Special Weapons and Tactics Team (S.W.A.T.) respond.

Kalamazoo Metro S.W.A.T., assisted by Kalamazoo Public Safety Operations Division Officers and Kalamazoo Public Safety K-9 Officers executed a search warrant at the residence and took the suspect into custody.  There were no injuries to the suspect, citizens or officers.  The firearm involved was found to be a stolen firearm.  The suspect, a 32-year-old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested for Retail Fraud, Resisting and Obstructing, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Home Invasion, and Receiving and Concealing.

Public Safety is requesting anyone with information about this crime to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 269-337-8994, the Criminal Investigation Division at 269-337-8139, or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
