Three stolen handguns seized over the weekend, three suspects in custody on multiple charges

Kalamazoo, MI: The first investigation occurred on Friday night, June 8th, 2018, at approximately 11:56 P.M. while Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were conducting surveillance in the 700 block of Douglas Avenue. During the operation a male walked in front of an undercover vehicle and pulled out a handgun. Officers watched the male inspect the gun and place it back into his waistband before walking toward a nearby apartment complex. Marked patrol units that were in the area assisting with the operation moved in to contact the subject. The subject fled on foot and threw the handgun as officers were taking him into custody. The fully loaded handgun was quickly recovered and found to be a stolen firearm from an area jurisdiction.   As a result of this investigation, a 32 year old Kalamazoo resident was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing an officer, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

The second investigation occurred on Saturday night, June 9th, 2018, at approximately 7:48pm when an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation near Howard St and Stearns Ave. During the course of the traffic stop officers learned that there were drugs inside the vehicle and began conducting a search of the car. While searching the car a fully loaded revolver was found in the glove box in addition to delivery amounts of marijuana. The firearm was found to have been stolen from another jurisdiction. Upon locating the stolen firearm officers attempted to detain the suspect who fled on foot. The 18 year old Kalamazoo resident was quickly captured and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing an officer, possession with intent to deliver marijuana and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The third investigation occurred on Sunday morning, June 10th. 2018, at approximately 5:24am. Officers had been conducting a directed patrol in the area of 1500 Fox Ridge and observed a vehicle in the middle of the parking lot. During the investigation information was obtained that a subject inside the vehicle was in possession of handgun and had waived it around in the air. As the vehicle left the area, officers contacted the driver after he pulled into a driveway to evade officers. As the driver exited the vehicle, officers noticed a firearm bulging out of his waistband. The loaded firearm was recovered and found to have been stolen from an address in the City of Kalamazoo. The 28 year old Kalamazoo resident was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and receiving stolen property.

Anyone have information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8994 or Silent Observer at 343-2100.
