Kalamazoo, MI: On Sunday, May 21st, 2017 at approximately 2:36 p.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Amir Khillah conducted a traffic stop in the 1300 blk. of E Stockbridge for a civil infraction. Upon contact with the driver he noted the smell of marijuana emanating from the car. PSO Khillah then observed a handgun on the passenger seat of the vehicle. The driver started to reach for the firearm; however, Officer Khillah was able to deescalate the situation through verbal commands. The driver was removed from the car and taken into custody. When officers began to search him, incident to arrest, the suspect resisted and was able to ingest suspected narcotics. During the investigation officers seized a firearm, narcotics, and marijuana.
The suspect, a 33 year old Kalamazoo resident, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He was then lodged at Kalamazoo County Jail for CCW, felon in possession of a firearm, resisting and obstructing, possession of control substance, no license, and a probation violation.
