Crash Causes Road Closure

May 9, 2017 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

******UPDATE******

Portage St is now back open.

Kalamazoo, MI: On Tuesday May 9, 2017 at approximately 3:07 am, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers responded to the intersection of Portage St and Stockbridge Avenue for a report of a traffic crash. Upon arrival officers found a power pole that had been sheared off by a vehicle that had left the scene. The crash caused a live power line to fall onto and block Portage St. The suspect vehicle was located a short distance from the initial scene. An investigation was conducted and the driver of the vehicle was eventually arrested for Operating while impaired. The 22 year old Kalamazoo resident was lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Portage Road, between Stockbridge Ave. and Egleston Ave., remains closed until crews can remove and repair the power line. The road is estimated to be closed until approximately 7:00 am.

Anyone who may have information regarding this investigation is asked to call Kalamazoo Public Safety at 337-8994 or Silent Observer at 343-2100 or www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
