High winds cause building collapse on Porter St

February 12, 2017 by Spencer Bridges

619 Porter St
Building collapse at 619 Porter St

Kalamazoo, MI: On Sunday, February 12, 2017, at approximately 5:00 P.M., Kalamazoo Public Safety responded to 619 Porter St. regarding a building collapse. Two walls of the building collapsed during a period of high winds. The building has been in disrepair and structurally unsound for some time. One of the walls spilled onto Porter St. and took out a power line. There were no injuries.

Porter and Pitcher streets are currently closed between Ransom and North. The area is a hazard to pedestrians and vehicles due to downed power lines, debris, and the danger of further building collapse. Crews are currently on scene mitigating the problem but there is no estimate as to how long it will take to open the roads.
