Kalamazoo – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety commends and works in alliance with the American Red Cross initiative to install smoke alarms in homes which need them for FREE.
Every year the United States experiences approximately 3000 lives lost to fire every year. 80% of those lives are lost in residential fires, 95% are lost in a structure of all types.
In residential home fires which had smoke alarms 30% were found not to be working. Smoke alarms need to be properly maintained and tested regularly. Smoke alarms over 10 years old shall be replaced.
A smoke alarm should be located in every occupied bedroom and common area of each level of the home.
Kalamazoo Public Safety in conjunction with the American Red Cross will be involved in a smoke alarm rally tomorrow Saturday October 15, 2016 primarily in the Milwood Neighborhood of Kalamazoo.
Those who wish to have smoke alarms installed please call the American Red Cross at 269-353-6180 extension 7181.
