Stolen firearm recovered after citizen complaint

October 9, 2016 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, October 8, 2016, at approximately 4:57 a.m., Kalamazoo Pubic Safety Officers responded to the area of West Paterson and Cobb Street for a citizen reporting gunshots in the area. The alert citizen observed two men walking away from the sound of the gunshots and called KDPS. The citizen providing a detailed description of the men, directed officers to their location. Public Safety Officers arrived at the scene and attempted to make contact with the men described by the citizen; however, both men took off running on foot in separate directions. Officers were able to apprehend both men after brief foot chases. During the course of this investigation officers located a handgun discarded by one of the men as he ran from officers.

As a result of this investigation a 17 year old Galesburg man, and a 21 year old Kalamazoo man, were both arrested. The 17 year old male was arrested for an outstanding warrant and Resist and Obstruct Police. Charges being sought against the 21 year old man include; Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Resist & Obstruct Police, Possession With Intent to Distribute Meth, Possession of Stolen Firearm, and Felony Firearm. Both subjects were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Once again Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety would like to reiterate that through collaboration with community members and stakeholders such as this one, we as a city will continue to reduce crime, build and maintain trust, and provide the most efficient, effective, and professional public safety services available.
