Kalamazoo, MI: On October 7, 2016, at about 8:15 PM, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers were dispatched to 459 N. Burdick Street, the Kalamazoo Transportation Center, regarding a bomb threat. A Metro Transit bus had arrived at the KTC, and passengers were disembarking. The bus driver was assisting passengers when he heard a male passenger say that there was a bomb on board. The bus driver cleared the bus and contacted the downtown beat officer, who was already on scene investigating another unrelated incident. When additional officers arrived, they cleared the surrounding area to ensure safety in the event a device was located.
The Bomb Squad was activated with an on-duty bomb technician responding within minutes. Following standard procedures, the bus was cleared, and no devices of any kind were found. The area was immediately opened to allow travelers to resume their travel plans.
Officers determined that the suspect had boarded another bus to flee the scene. Officers located the bus on Gull Road and detained the suspect. Based on the investigation, the suspect, a 47 year old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested for making a Bomb Threat and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at 337-8139 or Silent Observer at 343-2100.
