September 21, 2016 by Spencer Bridges

On Tuesday September 20th, 2016 around 10:54pm., Kalamazoo Public Safety was dispatched on a report of a structure fire at 1601 E Stockbridge, Jacks Party Store. Upon arrival officers discovered heavy smoke emanating from a second floor apartment. There was a resident screaming for help from apartment number 1. Officers were quickly able to place a ladder at the base of the window and rescue that citizen. During a search of the building a second citizen was rescued from an upstairs apartment. The fire was extinguished within 35 minutes of the original dispatch. The business was not damaged from the fire and the Red Cross assisted a resident of apartment number 2. Damage to the building was contained to apartment number 2 and a small section of the roof. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
