Firearms recovered after traffic stop

June 13, 2016 by Kalamazoo Public Safety

Kalamazoo, MI: On Saturday, June 11, 2016, at approximately 3:18 a.m., Kalamazoo Pubic Safety Officer Kyle Vosburg heard gunshots being fired in the area of Florence Street and N. Westnedge. PSO Vosburg responded to the area and spoke with several witnesses that provided information about a possible suspect who was seen firing a handgun from a vehicle.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers later spotted a vehicle and male matching the description of the suspect provided by witnesses. A traffic stop was conducted and contact made with the occupants of the vehicle in the area of Sherwood and Gilbert. Public Safety Officer Scott Brooks and his K9 partner Bodi responded to assist PSO Vosburg with the investigation. K9 Bodi alerted to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle and a search was conducted. As a result of the search narcotics and two handguns were located inside the vehicle. One of the handguns was discovered to be stolen out of Allegan County.

As a result of this investigation two Kalamazoo men in their 20’s were arrested. Charges on both are being sought for carrying a concealed weapon, discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle, and possession of a stolen firearm. Both subjects were lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Public Safety at 337-8994 or Silent Observer at 343-2100 or www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
