On Monday, October 14, 2013, at 12:48 a.m. Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the 4400 block of Lilac Lane, after a maintenance worker reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the apartment building. The first arriving officers found heavy smoke and flames engulfing a portion of the building. Public Safety Officers used several ladders to rescue residents from the balconies, while other officers began attacking the fire.
Initial reports from neighbors indicted that a female was possibly trapped inside. All efforts to locate the missing female were unsuccessful. It is confirmed that a female perished in the fire. Pending notification of family members, her name is not being released.
Red Cross, along with managers from Village Apartments, responded to assist with relocating the displaced residents. Kalamazoo Public Safety was assisted by the Texas Township and Oshtemo Fire Departments in battling this fire.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is currently under investigation by the Kalamazoo Public Safety Fire Marshal.
Kalamazoo Public Safety Fire Marshal has completed his investigation for the Lilac Lane Apartment Fire. Fire Marshal Williams advised the fire will be listed as undetermined. There is no further information at this time.
